Graphitic corrosion of ductile iron
WebMar 11, 2007 · INTRODUCTION Graphitic corrosion, or graphitization, occurs when the metallic constituents of gray iron are selectively removed or converted into corrosion products. This process leaves behind the graphite matrix of the gray iron, in the shape of the original casting. WebSoils with a corrosion rate that could penetrate a 0.375-inch-thick cast iron pipe wall in twenty years (the approximate pipe age) would be classified as moderately to severely corrosive on the basis of reported graphitic corrosion rates. None of the non-ruptured pipe sections examined showed signs of through-wall corrosion.

WebFeb 1, 2024 · Due to the difference in chemical potential between the graphite nodules and the iron matrix, DIs are more susceptible to galvanic (or graphitic) corrosion [9, 10]. Consequently, the corrosion ... Webthe Ductile-Iron Pipe Research Association (DIPRA). This phenomenon was also reported by the National Bureau of Standards in a paper by Melvin Romanoff in the September 1964 issue of the “Journal of the American Water Works Association.” Some pipes held as much as 500 psi even with complete perforation of the pipe wall by graphitic corrosion.
WebFeb 15, 2013 · The main difference of ductile iron and cast iron was their graphite structure. The graphite structure of gray cast iron is linear, and under severe loading, stress builds up unevenly around the ends of particles and weakens the metal. Graphitic corrosion occurs in cast iron, which has a continuous graphite network in its … WebSep 7, 2024 · Before the advent of ductile iron, an earlier solution to the problem with low ductility in gray iron was to heat treat initially hard and brittle white irons (named due to …
