WebPetya is a strain of ransomware that was first identified in 2016. Like other types of ransomware, Petya encrypts files and data on the victim's computer. The operators of Petya demand payment in Bitcoin before they will decrypt the files and make them usable again. On 30 June, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported it had seized the equipment that had been used to launch the cyberattack, claiming it to have belonged to Russian agents responsible for launching the attack.
