WebbPhilip Larkin Philip Larkin was born in Coventry in 1922. He read English at St. John’s College, Oxford. Larkin was declared unfit for military service in the Second World War, and so was allowed to continue his studies uninterrupted. After graduation he, like Elizabeth Jennings, worked as a librarian. WebbLarkin creates in the texts and how the texts become socially effective. Some of his excellent close readings testify that the style of a literary text is not independent from the author s politics. He accepts the consensus of former Larkin criticism that he is a metonymic (rather than metaphoric) writer.
